Maddie Thomson joined us for a placement after graduating from SAE Institute, looking to build up her industry experience.
Q. How did you come to work with Draw & Code?
I found Draw & Code while I was looking up local 3D studios, I looked at their work and I thought it was really impressive. I emailed them asking if they had any work experience available and they responded basically instantly and were very keen on finding something for me.
Q. How was your experience working with us?
Everyone at Draw & Code was super friendly and helped me feel really welcome. The communication leading up to the placement was excellent and really helped calm any nerves I had as this was the first time having any experience in a creative work environment. Considering everyone had to work from home, I still felt very included in the team.
Everyday I was a part of the morning meeting, which not only gave me an insight into everyone’s roles and projects, but also allowed me to feel part of the team, sharing what tasks I completed the day before and what work I had to do that day.
I got lots of support and great feedback everyday on my work which just made me more and more motivated. I really enjoyed my experience with Draw & Code and would highly recommend it to anyone who gets the opportunity to work with them.
Q. What did you work on?
I was given a choice of tasks and I chose to create a concept for an app. I looked into UI and UX and used tools like Figma to create wireframes and consider transitions within the app. I also used Adobe softwares such as Photoshop and Illustrator to design buttons and icons for the app.
There was a lot more to consider than I realised and I found that really interesting. I was able to do lots of research into designing apps and I learned a lot that I can definitely use in my own work in the future.
Q. What did you learn from the experience?
When the placement came to an end I felt a bit sad, being in that creative environment made me feel at home and I didn’t want it to end. Not only did I learn lots about working in a professional creative environment, but I also learned a lot personally.
This experience has given me the motivation to push myself out of my comfort zone and learn new skills and helped me reassure my goals in working with companies in the game industry.
Q. What’s next for you?
Now that I feel as though my motivation has returned, I am determined to learn new skills and work on my portfolio in pursuit of working with a company like Draw & Code.
